Axinix is a medication that contains the active ingredient Axitinib, which is used to treat advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in adults after failure of one prior systemic therapy. Axitinib works by inhibiting the activity of certain receptors called vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFRs) that are involved in the development of blood vessels and the growth and progression of cancer. It is taken orally as a 5 mg dose twice daily, with or without food, and should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. If a dose is missed, it should not be taken at a later time. Common side effects of Axitinib include diarrhea, hypertension, fatigue, decreased appetite, nausea, dysphonia, hand-foot syndrome, weight loss, vomiting, weakness, and constipation. Axitinib is metabolized mainly by enzymes called CYP3A4/5 and, to a lesser extent, CYP1A2, CYP2C19, and UGT1A1. It should not be taken with strong inhibitors or inducers of these enzymes, or with medications that may affect their activity. Axitinib should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from light, and kept out of reach of children. It is available in two strengths, Axinix 1 and Axinix 5, which contain 1 mg and 5 mg of Axitinib, respectively. Axinix is packaged in commercial boxes containing 180 tablets in a bottle for the 1 mg strength and 60 tablets in a bottle for the 5 mg strength.
